Bosch GCM12SD Mitre Saw - New Technology in Tools

!±8± Bosch GCM12SD Mitre Saw - New Technology in Tools

Let's take a close look at the Bosch GCM12SD mitre saw and the new technology it brings to power tools.

New Axial Glide System

This saw uses something called the axial glide system. What this means is that instead of the typical sliding arms, there are two articulating arms that carry the head where the blade is. Each of these arms moves independently creating a smooth movement when using the saw.

These arms are created from cast aluminum which is extremely durable and rigid.

Reduced footprint

Because of these arms, a situation is created where the back of the saw does not stick out at the back. When there is nothing sticking out, the distance from the back of the saw to the front is minimized, creating a smaller footprint while still having a saw with wide cutting capacity.

Enclosed bearings

The bearings that the arms rotate on are enclosed, which means no dust will penetrate them. In contrast, a typical sliding mitre saw's rails are exposed to the elements which allow them to collect dust. This can require additional lubrication during the life of the saw.

New Technology is not available on smaller versions of the mitre saw

The Bosch GCM12SD mitre saw axial glide system is not available on a 10 inch saw, only a 12 inch. This may change as the engineers discover new ways to implement this technology into a smaller package.

Safety features

The safety features are reasonable, especially when starting the saw. You must first depress a switch and hold it before pulling the blade start handle. All other regular safety features you would expect from a compound mitre saw are present as well, including attaching the dust exhaust to an external vacuum if you have one in your shop. The Bosch CGM12SD mitre saw does not throw a lot of dust which is a technical feat in itself, but still, having a vacuum minimizes inhaling dust particles.

For left handed individuals

Fortunately, this saw can be used with both left and right handed individuals. As well, the handle can be rotated from a horizontal to a vertical position.

Resistant to wear and calibration

With the axial glide system in place of the traditional rail system, it eliminates sliding rail wear. Also, because there are no rails, you will not have to calibrate the rails.

The trademarked square lock fences are precision aligned at 90 degree angles and don't need any adjustments. You can slide each fence into position to align your material easily.

The PS20-2A can drive 100 three-inch screws on a single battery charge. View larger.
12-Volt Litheon Batteries for Long-Lasting Power
The PS20-2A gets its power from Litheon batteries, the most advanced lithium-ion batteries available today. These batteries allow more battery charges and provide longer runtime with no memory effect--meaning the batteries don't need to be empty before charging. The batteries can also be taken out of the charger before charging is complete.

Other benefits include: significantly less self discharge; electronic cell protection that guards against overheating, overload, and deep discharge; and no loss of power from the first to last screw or hole. Best of all, these batteries will fully charge in 30 minutes and will be at 85% capacity in just 15 minutes.

Compact, Lightweight Design for Efficient, Fatigue-Free Work
Measuring only 6.0 by 6.5 inches--nearly half the size of stick drivers and other ultra-compact drills/drivers--and weighing just 1.8 pounds (with batteries), the PS20-2A packs a punch without taking up too much space. Its compact design makes it easier to drill straight holes at high and otherwise odd angles, allowing you to accomplish a day's worth of professional drill/driving tasks without excessive fatigue. You can also carry the tool in your pocket, hang it on your tool belt, or keep it in a nail pouch when you're climbing ladders or moving from task to task.

High Torque and Fast Speeds for Quick, Reliable Results
This powerful tool provides over 100 in./lbs. of torque--25% more torque than comparable models--for ultra-efficient driving and drilling. It drives 100 three-inch screws (per battery charge) and drill holes up to 1/2-inch in diameter. The PS20-2A also offers variable speeds up to 500 RPM--25% more speed for fast, reliable results.

10+1 Clutch with Max Setting for Improved Control
The 10+1 clutch system, similar to that of standard drills/drivers, offers 10 drives and one "Max" drill setting for control and precision, while eliminating over-torque in soft-base materials. The Max setting also allows for pilot and other small bore holes. For added convenience, the 10+1 controls are conveniently located at the front of the drill, so it's a snap to make quick adjustments.

Ergonomics and Soft Grips for Long-Term Comfort
Besides its light weight, the PS20-2A boasts great ergonomics and soft grips to deliver comfort over extended periods, giving you the freedom to work all day without over-taxing your wrists and hands. And it's easy to keep bits handy, thanks to the tool's "Clic-Change" bit holder, which also makes 1/4-inch hex shank bit changes quick and easy. Additionally, the chuck is magnetized to secure locking bits.

Variable-Speed Trigger and Forward/Reverse Button for Precision and Versatility
The PS20-2A drills up to 3/8 inch in wood and 1/4 inch in steel. To help ensure high-quality results, the variable-speed trigger provides sensitivity and control for optimum precision. And for added versatility, there's a forward/reverse button for driving or removing screws.

User-Friendly and Durable for Hassle-Free Drilling and Driving
A motor brake features an improved design for serial screwing, while a metal clutch ring has a robust design for long-term durability. There's also an LED to illuminate dark or enclosed areas while you work.

ProVantage Guarantee
The PS20-2A comes with the ProVantage three-year protection plan, which guarantees two years of battery protection and one year of tool protection. Under this plan, you can receive two years of free battery replacements, tool replacement for one year, and a free tool repair package for the second and third years.

The first thing you'll notice about Bosch's rotary hammer is its great ergonomics, which clearly were a major consideration in the design of the hammer. The grip and trigger mechanism are well integrated, especially the front grip, and long enough to accommodate different body styles (I've got long arms; my buddy is the opposite: we both liked the tool's feel). For a rotary hammer, design is especially critical during overhead and down-drilling operations, where fatigue can quickly rear its ugly head.

Does Hammer Strength Matter?

!±8± Does Hammer Strength Matter?

To the casual person who keeps a hammer around the house to hang pictures and perform other light duty, there may be some thought that in general, the strength of a hammer is not a big deal, as long as it gets the job done. The fact is hammer strength does matter a great deal in different situations. Here are some examples of when the strength and durability of the hammer will come into play.

A quick trip to the hardware store will help even the most casual of observers understand there are different hammers for different tasks. Some hammers weigh more than others; still others have longer handles than some other hammers on the market. You find handles made of steel, wood, or fiberglass. Some of the handles have rubber grips. Each of these hammers is meant to handle a different type of job.

Some hammers are meant for light household duty. This would include simple projects like hanging a picture, tacking down molding or building a small shelf out of some boards. There is not a need for a lot of power to go behind the swings for these types of hammers. As such, the strength of these hammers can be less than other types of hammers.

From there, you have hammers that are meant for the production of more complex building projects, such as creating built in cabinetry or framing a house. These types of hammers will require a higher level of hammer strength, as they have to work with nails that are much longer and will provide the support needed to handle the bulkier and heavier building materials.

A good thing to keep in mind about hammer strength is that the more involved the project and the heavier the materials, the more important the strength of the hammer will become, if you want to have the power behind the swing and do the job right the first time.
