Let's take a close look at the Bosch GCM12SD mitre saw and the new technology it brings to power tools.
New Axial Glide System
This saw uses something called the axial glide system. What this means is that instead of the typical sliding arms, there are two articulating arms that carry the head where the blade is. Each of these arms moves independently creating a smooth movement when using the saw.
These arms are created from cast aluminum which is extremely durable and rigid.
Reduced footprint
Because of these arms, a situation is created where the back of the saw does not stick out at the back. When there is nothing sticking out, the distance from the back of the saw to the front is minimized, creating a smaller footprint while still having a saw with wide cutting capacity.
Enclosed bearings
The bearings that the arms rotate on are enclosed, which means no dust will penetrate them. In contrast, a typical sliding mitre saw's rails are exposed to the elements which allow them to collect dust. This can require additional lubrication during the life of the saw.
New Technology is not available on smaller versions of the mitre saw
The Bosch GCM12SD mitre saw axial glide system is not available on a 10 inch saw, only a 12 inch. This may change as the engineers discover new ways to implement this technology into a smaller package.
Safety features
The safety features are reasonable, especially when starting the saw. You must first depress a switch and hold it before pulling the blade start handle. All other regular safety features you would expect from a compound mitre saw are present as well, including attaching the dust exhaust to an external vacuum if you have one in your shop. The Bosch CGM12SD mitre saw does not throw a lot of dust which is a technical feat in itself, but still, having a vacuum minimizes inhaling dust particles.
For left handed individuals
Fortunately, this saw can be used with both left and right handed individuals. As well, the handle can be rotated from a horizontal to a vertical position.
Resistant to wear and calibration
With the axial glide system in place of the traditional rail system, it eliminates sliding rail wear. Also, because there are no rails, you will not have to calibrate the rails.
The trademarked square lock fences are precision aligned at 90 degree angles and don't need any adjustments. You can slide each fence into position to align your material easily.
